If you're an actor, singer, writer or artist, you know the stress of making a living without losing your creative soul. Living in Los Angeles and being part of the "Business" is, to put it mildly, crazy making. I've had the privilege of working with many creative individuals (and even some creative couples) and there are themes that are particular to being a "Creative":
- Finding a way to make a secure living in a wildly insecure field, and discovering the best model to do this
- Feeling like an imposter or "con artist" not just an artist (dancer, writer, etc.) but knowing when to utilize the "con" of confidence to get the job or the part
- Finding ways to deal with rejection of your work without taking it as rejection of your self - or focusing less on the product and more on the process of your creativity
- Reconciling the forces of ambivalence and ambiguity that creativity thrives on without destorying your ability to make wise decisions
- Developing a healthy relationship with money and reconciling the desire to freely share your gift with the need to make money
- Maintaining your unique self without becoming the role or character you are portraying
- Being in healthy relationships with others (whether they are in creative fields or not)
These issues and more are the grist for the mill for many creative individuals. It's a crazy business, but you don't have to be.
